"Los Tercios no se rinden" se basa en el valioso testimonio de un capitán español, don Alonso Vázquez, testigo directo del Asedio de Amberes (1584-85) y de la inmediatamente posterior Batalla de Empel, dos de tantos gloriosos episodios de nuestra Historia que, con el paso del tiempo, han caído en el olvido o, lo que es peor, han sido en numerosas ocasiones deformados y adulterados por una interesada propaganda partidista. Pérez-Foncea, con el estilo vibrante y sustentado en una sólida documentación de éxitos anteriores como "El héroe del Caribe" o "Invencibles", rescata del olvido los hechos más relevantes de aquellos épicos años. De igual modo, el autor recoge el conocido como Milagro de Empel, tan desconocido por el español contemporáneo, y los motivos por los que la Virgen, en su advocación de la Inmaculada Concepción, es desde 1760 la Patrona de España. Este patronazgo, como se verá, tiene su orígen y está íntimamente ligado al asombroso milagro ocurrido en la población holandesa el 8 de diciembre de 1585, en una tesitura de especial peligro para las tropas españolas. Todavía hoy permanece en el lugar una ermita que recuerda lo que en neerlandés se dio en llamar Het wonder van Empel (El milagro de Empel).
